One new/long-lost hobby we picked up last year was making boondoggles. Basically the only thing to do with boondoggles is use them as lanyards. Fittingly the word boondoggle means "work or activity that is wasteful or pointless but gives the appearance of having value." So, they're a lot of fun to make and be creative with, and their bulk and colorfulness make them useful for finding your keys, but that might be about it.

Ryan really started us out on this when he was taking care of some Joann cash we had and a sale that was going on. He made a lot of different things, and the boys and I would have requests for him to make us things. Some of the first things he made were a simple cube pattern for Jared and a twist for Karl. They loved them and kept playing with them for days. Jared called his a Hulk finger.

But, he was very soon making some of the most complicated boondoggles I've ever seen, like an American flag, a Creeper, and a tornado that actually got bigger as it went higher.

Ryan started making them for gifts. He taught me how to make them too. We found it to be a great project to do while watching some of our favorite series. We also taught it to a some of our friends and a couple sister missionaries who wanted to relearn.

We found there were a lot of patterns we could try, and plenty of online video tutorials for the different designs.

Our time spent at this hobby has kind of puttered out, now that we've given them as gifts to all our loved ones, but we hope this can be a fun thing for our kids to get into when they're older.
