About this time last year, we started getting into perler beads and making perler creations. This was a hobby I had never done growing up, but Ryan was familiar with. We found it to be a great family activity and something the kids could do during the day.
Jared especially got into it, and basically started creating his own toys when he wanted something. He made tons of Halo guys and Minecraft guys. He and Karl both now have a their own box containers in their room that they keep their ever growing collection of perler creations in. One of their favorite creations, that they have to share, is one that Ryan made, a halo plasma pistol. Somethings you can find a pattern already in a book or online, but some you have to come up with yourself. That what Ryan did for their plasma pistol.
Karl really likes just getting the shaped peg-boards and adding whatever color he wants. Sometimes it's random, but other times, he'll try to use only one color, like when he made an almost completely green monkey.
As Jared started to do it more, he became confident in following
patterns and pictures. I'd just help him if he picked out something that
was time consuming, so it wouldn't have to take him all day.
I found perler to be useful for doing holiday crafts with the boys, gifts, and making Alphabet letters for Jared for his learning. With the letters he was able to practice spelling, word groups, and reading words. He also just liked to get them out and play with them.
That's one of our new family hobbies we've been having a lot of fun with! :-)
